About the Pilbara

The Pilbara runs from the Exmouth Gulf to Port Hedland - a remote, industrial coastline with exceptional fishing. The Dampier Archipelago alone has 42 islands, each surrounded by quality reef and pelagic action.

This is fly-in, fly-out country. Karratha and Port Hedland have large FIFO populations, which means good facilities but accommodation can be tight. The fishing pressure is relatively low given the quality available - locals guard their spots carefully.

The continental shelf is further offshore here, but the island systems and reef structures hold incredible numbers of fish. Spanish mackerel, giant trevally, coral trout, red emperor, and queenfish are all abundant. The Montebello Islands are legendary among serious anglers.

Key Fishing Areas

  • Dampier Archipelago - 42 islands, world-class reef and pelagics
  • Montebello Islands - Remote, pristine, serious fish
  • Karratha - Gateway to the Dampier islands
  • Port Hedland - Underrated, big tides, quality fish
  • Onslow - Southern Pilbara, less developed

Why Fish Here

  • Less pressure - Remote location keeps crowds away
  • Island systems - Protected water, endless structure
  • Numbers - Schools of pelagics, quality reef fish
  • All open - No closures, fish what you want
  • Big tides - 6-8m tides create epic fishing windows

Top Targets

Numbers and size. Trolling around the islands produces multiple fish per session. Best Mar-Aug when water cools slightly.
Dampier Archipelago is GT heaven. Popping and jigging around reef edges. Fish to 40kg+ regularly encountered.
Premium table fish available year-round. Bottom fishing over reef structure. The Montebello Islands are particularly good.
Incredible sport fish on light tackle. Surface lures and poppers. Schools work bait in the shallows - spectacular fishing.
Quality coral trout around the island systems. Trolling reef edges or soft plastics. Cooler months are best.
Creek systems and mangroves hold quality jacks. Casting hardbodies and soft plastics. Tough fishing but rewarding.

Techniques That Work

Trolling

Bread and butter for mackerel. Work the island channels and reef edges. Skirted lures and minnows both work. Early morning and late afternoon are prime.

Popping

GTs respond to surface lures worked aggressively over reef structure. Heavy gear required - PE8-10 minimum. Not for the faint-hearted.

Bottom Fishing

Red emperor, coral trout, and rankin cod over reef structure. Big tides mean anchor well. Fresh bait or jigs both work.

Creek Fishing

Mangrove jack and barra in the tidal creeks. Cast hardbodies to structure. Watch for crocs in the water.

Weather & Conditions

Wind Patterns

Dry season (Apr-Oct): SE trades dominate. Generally fishable but can blow 15-25 knots.

Wet season (Nov-Mar): Variable, afternoon storms possible. Cyclone risk.

Best months: Apr-May and Sep-Oct for calmer conditions.

Tides

Range: 6-8m tides are normal. Some of the biggest in Australia.

Effect: Creates strong currents. Fish the changes - slack periods can be excellent.

Safety: Check tide times carefully. Ramp access can be limited at low tide.

Water Temperature

Summer: 29-31°C. Hot and tropical.

Winter: 24-26°C. Still warm but more comfortable.

Effect: Cooler months bring better mackerel and coral trout action.

Cyclone Season

Nov-Apr is cyclone season. Monitor BOM closely. Have a plan. The Pilbara cops serious systems. Fishing immediately after a cyclone can be exceptional.

🚗 Access & Logistics

Distance from Perth

  • Onslow: 1,380km (14hrs)
  • Karratha: 1,535km (16hrs)
  • Dampier: 1,555km (16hrs)
  • Port Hedland: 1,640km (17hrs)

Most visitors fly. Qantas and Virgin service Karratha and Port Hedland daily.

⛽ Fuel & Facilities

Fuel: Available in all towns but expensive. Boat fuel at Dampier and Port Hedland.

Tackle: Basic supplies in Karratha. Bring what you need from Perth.

Ice: Available but can be in short supply. Bring a good esky.

🏨 Accommodation

FIFO demand means accommodation is tight and expensive. Book well ahead. Caravan parks fill up in peak season. Hotels cater to business travellers.

Safety

Crocs: Present in coastal creeks. Be aware when wading or handling fish in the water.

Remoteness: Mobile coverage patchy. VHF radio essential. Tell someone your plans.

Local Tips

Work the tides

Big tides create big opportunities. Fish the tide changes. Current edges concentrate bait and predators. Slack water can be excellent for reef fishing.

Montebello Islands are worth the run

Remote but exceptional. Red emperor, coral trout, and GTs in pristine condition. Needs a capable boat and good weather window. Multi-day trips are ideal.

Respect the industrial areas

Working ports and shipping channels. Stay clear of vessels and marked areas. The fish don't care about the infrastructure - some of the best fishing is near the islands within sight of the port.

Bring spare gear

No good tackle shops up here. GTs and mackerel break gear. Bring extra leaders, hooks, lures, and anything else you might need. You can't just duck to the tackle shop.
